Off to the Maine Coast
$0.00At dinner in the camp dining hall on Tuesday evening our new friends Tom and Carole Persia (Rascal’s humans) told us that based on the weather forecast that they were going to take a midweek break and go to Manchester, NH on Wednesday, June 5. Wednesday appeared to be the nicest day for a side road trip since a front was moving in Thursday evening and Friday looked to be a dreary day. Thus Susie and I decided to head into New Hampshire ourselves, since we had never been there before.

Die Hundepension: Pet Hotel at the Frankfurt Airport in Germany
$0.00Susie is always glad to hear from her canine friends, admirers, and boyfriends, both in the United States and abroad. She just received news from her German Shepherd buddy, Fritz, that there is a dog hotel at the airport in Frankfurt, Germany. Of course Fritz, a bit on the fresh side, invited Susie to join him in one of the kennels at the hotel. Although Susie will pass on the opportunity for now, who knows what the future holds.

The Inn at Restful Paws: Holland, Massachusetts
$0.00Susie is always looking for great places for pets to stay and one of her friends told her about this great bed and breakfast in West Central Massachusetts. Restful Paws really got her attention because it might be classified as people-friendly because it is geared to pets first. Susie said what with “Great Name!”

On the Road to Marlboro
$0.00After a night of rest in Albany, NY, Susie was ready to roll to dog camp registration at the camp located at Marlboro College in Marlboro, VT. Fortunately the patrol team was only 70 miles away, so could make a leisurely drive to Marlboro taking in the interesting sites and places along the way. Registration was from 12:30 to 2:30 pm so we had time to have a good breakfast, load up and enjoy the drive down NY 7 and VT 9.

Holiday Inn Express: St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec
$0.00On Saturday, June 8, 2013, we arrived at the hotel at 3:45 in the afternoon. We selected the location south of Montreal because the rates are less outside of the city and the hotel was listed as pet friendly. At this property there was no additional charge for Susie.

Looking for the Sheep in Whitesville, Kentucky
$0.00As always one thing leads to another, and in this case watching a barbeque cooking show, the BBQ Crawl, on the Cooking Channel during the summer led us to a day trip to Whitesville, KY on September 22, 2013. In the show Danielle Dimovski, aka Diva Q, travels around the country to showcase BBQ restaurants and competitions by the best BBQ cooks in the United States. In this instance one of the places she visited was the BBQ at the annual church picnic at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church in Whitesville, KY.

Beau Prepares for the Patrol
$0.00Beau wants to let everyone know that he is working hard to get ready for full participation in the Pet Patrol. He has already been in training with his daddy and big sis Susie. The little dickens has already mastered “Sit” and “Down,” and has had a perfect score the past 10 days on going potty in his potty box filled with horse bedding material. He also is learning “No,” “Off,” and “Leave it.” The little smarty even understands “get all the way in your box” when he tries to do a lazy two paws in and two out when he pees.

TownePlace Suites: Erie, PA
$0.00The Pet Patrol rolled into Erie around 6:00 pm on Friday, May 31 after the long drive from Louisville ready for a good night’s rest before proceeding on their journey to Camp Gone to the Dogs. For those travelling to this hotel, be aware that the street address is misleading, so a typical GPS will not know that the actual hotels in this area are behind the shopping center on the main road which has the address. The TownePlace Suites is located behind the other hotels in the corner of the property.

Chelsea Royal Diner: West Brattleboro, Vermont
$0.00On our arrival at camp on Sunday, June 2, it was a warm to hot summer day. Our room was on the second floor of Marlboro North and fortunately we brought a fan to help cool things down. Of course a front moved through and the rest of the week was cool, but for a couple of Southerners cool water and iced drinks were imperative.

Heading Home from Canada: Where are the sheep?
$0.00After our two night stay in Niagara Falls, Canada, it was finally time to head home. The other adventures in the Niagara Falls area will appear later in the Guest Patrol, since they are not primarily related to pet travel. These will include the fireworks show on Sunday night, a visit to a large Buddhist temple and exploring the river down from the Falls, and the ride up to the Falls on the Maid of the Mist. Obviously Susie would not have enjoyed the fireworks display, nor would she appreciate the soaking we received near the Canadian Horseshoe Falls. The pet friendliness of the Fallsview Hotel made it possible to make these short local side trips knowing that Susie was well cared for when I was gone whether for a meal or to see a site unsuited for pets.

Le Boat: Scotland
$0.00Generally, I write about hotels that stand still, however, this time, you get to take your hotel with you! If you can drive a car, you can captain a boat on a canal. After a short demonstration and briefing, you get the keys to your own floating Villa. You don’t ever have to worry about getting seasick, because these boats are so stable, you won’t spill your morning coffee.

Firebird Café: Essex Junction, VT
$0.00After leaving Montpelier we decided to start looking for a place to have lunch as we approached Burlington. We exited just before Burlington, but couldn’t find any restaurants close to I-89. Since we had our Garmin GPS to get back on track, we continued about five miles down the road until we came to Essex Junction and saw the Firebird Café on the left-hand side. Since this was obviously a local place and not a fast-food chain, we decided to stop and check it out.

Talbott Hotel: Chicago
$0.00My kind of town – Chicago! And my kind of hotel – the Talbott! I don't know about you, but I love big cities, however, when I go to my room, I want to take the “big” out of the city and feel more cozy. The beauty of staying at this property is that the location is close to the Magnificent Mile, nightlife and museums, but it sits a few blocks away on a quiet tree lined street which gives you the best of both worlds.

Bowser Beer: Beer for Dogs – Pack it up for your Dog when you Travel
$0.00One of Susie’s many male admirers brought an interesting and unique product to our attention that she would like to share with her many friends – Bowser Beer. What a great idea! Of course this beer is non-alcoholic and does not contain any hops which are toxic to dogs. In other words, do not give your dog human beer; instead buy him/her a supply of Bowser Beer.

Fallsview Hotel Best Western: Niagara Falls, Ontario
$0.00Sunday evening of June 9, 2023 we rolled into Niagara Falls, Ontario and made our way to our base station for the next two nights, the Niagara Falls Fallsview Best Western. The hotel had been recommended to us by a friend at the dog park in Louisville, who told us how dog friendly the hotel was. They didn’t overstate it. While writing this article, I saw a site that lists the top 12 pet friendly hotels in the world and the Fallsview Best Western was on the list.
