As always one thing leads to another, and in this case watching a barbeque cooking show, the BBQ Crawl, on the Cooking Channel during the summer led us to a day trip to Whitesville, KY on September 22, 2013.  In the show Danielle Dimovski, aka Diva Q, travels around the country to showcase BBQ restaurants and competitions by the best BBQ cooks in the United States. In this instance one of the places she visited was the BBQ at the annual church picnic at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church in Whitesville, KY.

Susie and I watched the show and were intrigued by the mention of their BBQ specialty – mutton. Danielle raved about how good it was, and that the BBQ pit in Whitesville was the longest one she had ever seen.  Fortunately the church picnic was still in the near future, so we put it on our calendar as a must do event.

We headed across the Ohio River on the way to Whitesville to save time on the interstate and crossed back over the river on the bridge at Tell City, Indiana. We arrived at 1 pm to the church and discovered that the sit down meal had been served from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. Fortunately we were still able to buy several pounds of the mutton to take back home. The cost was ten dollars a pound and we purchased two pounds, but they gave us about three pounds.

Susie enjoyed walking around the church grounds and meeting new friends. She was disappointed though because there were no sheep!  Since we had missed the sit down meal, we left and stopped at Mil’s Dairy Drive In close to the church in the middle of Whitesville and bought a couple of vanilla soft serve cones that turned out to be some of the best soft serve we have ever had.

Since we were in no rush to return home, we took the old roads through Kentucky and enjoyed the scenery.  When we got home we ate some of the mutton, and it was absolutely delicious. We will definitely return for more next year.

Catholic Church picnics run all summer and into the Fall throughout both southern Indiana and central Kentucky. In the future we may feature and recommend the best picnics to attend for those who are either close by or are passing through the area.
