Le Boat: Scotland

$0.00

Quick Overview

Generally, I write about hotels that stand still, however, this time, you get to take your hotel with you! If you can drive a car, you can captain a boat on a canal. After a short demonstration and briefing, you get the keys to your own floating Villa. You don’t ever have to worry about getting seasick, because these boats are so stable, you won’t spill your morning coffee.

The most wonderful part is you get to go at your own pace. The boats accommodate from 2-12 people depending on the size you select. They are fully equipped with all the comforts of a hotel plus a kitchen. They include electronics, towels, linens, pillows, safety equipment, life jackets, radios and cd players. For an additional charge, you can add a barbecue and bicycles. Pets are also welcome at a charge of $55 per pet with a maximum of 2 allowed.

Now that you know what you can do, where should you go? Well, in this article, I am taking you to Scotland, because you may just be the one to spot the Loch Ness monster on your voyage! The Highland Fling Short Break is a 65 km trek through the Caledonian Canal and can take from 3 to 5 nights, depending on your pace. You will go through 18 locks and will have been shown how to navigate them. Talk about great travel stories when you get home. You will pass through the quiet town of Laggan, where you might want to get off to sample what the local pub has to offer. If you have one too many, just sleep it off on the boat – it is your hotel after all. Get up early and stop in Benavie, where you can visit the highest mountain in the UK. You can also take a mountain gondola ride there (who knew?) and guess what, it is also the home of the Ben Nevis Distillery! After you take the tour, you can buy some of the Scotch and take a bottle back home with you.

Next stop is Invergarry where you will see the remains of the Old Castle, go for a walk and stop at the hotel to listen to some music. Then on to Fort-Augustus on the shores of Loch Ness.  If you see the monster, send us a picture!

Tour the Clansman Centre as you relive the 17th century in this living museum and spend the day fishing, eating, touring and just enjoying the lush scenery. You will make many friends on your canal journey in Scotland, but this is not the only itinerary available to you. There are other trips within Scotland as well as other countries. If this sounds wonderful, you can also plan a canal trip in France, England, Ireland, Italy, Belgium, Holland, Germany and Poland.

So, think of hotels that float where you are the Captain of your vessel. It’s a unique way to see parts of the world at a pace that is comfortable for you. Ahoy and sleep tight!
