This summer we crossed the Plains through Nebraska, following the famed pioneer trail along the Platte River. We traveled west from St. Louis, skirted around Kansas City, and passed through a small slice of Iowa, where sunflowers grow wild in the fence rows and the dirt is black as coffee grounds.

With a full stomach and an armload of cookies, I headed back on the California Highway 1 Discovery Route for the town of Harmony, population 18. It took about 15 minutes from Cayucos, with more amazing scenery along the way. They were all flavorful and reasonably priced. You can go out on their grounds sitting high up in the hills and have a picnic as you enjoy a bottle of wine. We live in a hectic world where the days seem to fly by at warp speed and we tend to miss some of the beauty that surrounds us, but I found a spot where time stands still and nature stands out. Join me as I take you to Mohawk Valley, just outside Eugene, Oregon to the Tipi Village Retreat.

At any rate, the official Launch of “Blackberry Pie Murder” was at Powell’s Cedar Creek Crossing in Beaverton, Oregon. This is a really cool bookstore and… can you say a really big bookstore? It is almost 3,500 square feet of pure delight: filled with half-a-MILLION books and Book accessories, and if that weren’t enough, many other strange and wonderful things that you never KNEW that you needed, but for which you have been desperately searching for YEARS.

Being on the 19^th (Penthouse) floor; the water seems hotter, the maid service faster and even the soap seems frothier than the norm. After traveling to the hotel in style via Media Escort, we were treated to express check- in and rapidly whisked up to our rooms, where the management had laid out a welcoming spread of cheese, crackers and Willamette Valley Pinot Gris for our favorite author-who also happens to be my mom- Joanne Fluke.
