How sweet it is! Welcome to the Hotel Hershey, a 1930's property that is a member of the Historic Hotels of America. I think most of us Boomers grew up on Hershey's chocolate – I know I'm still addicted! So why not celebrate your sweet tooth with a visit to a town built on chocolate that has a gorgeous hotel with charm, elegance and a variety of activities?
This is a place you can visit for a personal retreat or getaway, but if you want to bring along the grand kids, it's perfect for that as well. You can tailor it for any experience.
If you are not a fan of chocolate, then stay away, but then who doesn't like Hershey's kisses? Believe it or not, the street lights are shaped like Hershey's kisses and chocolate permeates every activity. Upon check in, you are given a chocolate bar and are asked for your preference of milk or dark. How about trying a chocolate martini, a chocolate beer or a chocolate covered cherry Manhattan by the fireplace in the Iberian Lounge? O.K. They do have a LOT of other types of drinks, but I couldn't resist mentioning these.
They have a host of restaurants that offer everything from Continental to American to Italian cuisines, not to mention the Cocoa Beanery for; you guessed it, Hershey's hot chocolate! I'm getting cavities just writing this article!
But wait, there's more – there's an amazing spa nicknamed the Chocolate Spa with treatments like the Whipped Cocoa Wrap, a Chocolate Fondue Wrap and oh so many others like the Wine, Cuban and Rose Garden treatments. It's not just about chocolate here.
So you think you may put on a few pounds tasting all this chocolate? Have no fear, there are hiking trails, indoor and outdoor pools, bocce ball, tennis and a fitness center, which I would suggest you visit. They offer everything from yoga to tai chi, to pilates to aerobics – see, no guilt – just come here and work it off every day.
They also offer Segway tours and some of the instructors are in their 70's and 80's, so if you haven't tried this activity, this would be the time to do it. For all you garden lovers, you will want to explore Hershey Gardens with 23 acres of stunning flowers including 5,600 roses, a rock garden, a children's garden, japanese, perennial and seasonal gardens as well as a butterfly garden. What a unique opportunity!
Other activities include 4 golf courses, an ice skating rink, Hershey Outlets and other shopping, not to mention that the town of Gettysburg is only an hour away.
If you decide to bring the grandchildren, they can investigate Hershey's Chocolate World, a free tour ride on how chocolate is made that ends with a free sample, ZooAmerica with 11 acres, and last but not least, Hershey Park and its 65 rides and attractions.
In addition to the hotel lodging, there are cottages available with 4-6 bedrooms so you can bring the whole family.
