When we found out the “best” Antique Mall and oldest continuously running Dance Hall in Texas were in a place called Gruene, we had to head out on patrol. We were on our way back from San Antonio visiting our niece and spent a great afternoon walking around exploring this unique small Texas town.
German Immigrant farmers were the first to settle the area in the mid 1840’s. Henry Gruene established a large cotton farming operation in the 1870’s. The Boll Weevil infestation in 1925, which destroyed the cotton crop and then the Depression, started the towns decline.
Today, the Gruene Historic District is completely restored and alive with activity. The Antique Company is housed in the mercantile building and headquarters for Henry Gruene that was built in 1904. His safe can still be seen in the store. We highly recommend this mall for anyone who likes a high percentage of old, authentic items. Rare artifacts abound.
Across the street is Texas’ oldest Dance Hall, Gruene Hall. It’s been instrumental in starting the careers of Lyle Lovett and George Straight. They have live music every day! Built in 1878, it served as a saloon and social hall for area cotton farmers. The Dance Hall was the center of community social life for well over one hundred years.
Close by is The Gristmill River Restaurant and Bar. It is built into an old cotton gin overlooking the Guadalupe River it once used for power. It is a very unique design and very large venue. It is a must see whether you eat there or not.
Gruene’s Historic District is filled with specialty shops, restaurants, 2 river outfitters, antiques, and wine tasting. Old Gruene Market Days features 100 Artists’ booths held the third full weekend of the month February through November and the first weekend in December. Their theme is “Deep in the Art of Gruene”.
