This is one of those family treasures you find as you travel the world. I grew up in California and never knew what a hogie was until I moved to New York. I never really had any interest in them until I tried this place. Guess what - I am now craving them!
Sonny was a baker in Philadelphia and he moved down to Florida. He opened Sonny’s Sandwich Shop in 1958.
We were driving to find Sonny’s down this neighborhood road and I thought we were in the wrong place, this Boomer being so bad with direction. You finally see a strip maul center and there it is! This is such a friendly place when you step inside. You might have to wait a bit for a table. It is super casual, simple and like a diner. You know the moment you spot 100’s of freshly baked hogies lined up, they mean business. They have to make even more each day since they were profiled by The Food Network star Guy Fieri in 2009. This really placed them on the map.
You might get lucky and are served by John or Valerie, the kids of Sonny’s who now run the restaurant! Their kids and nieces and nephews might also serve you. This place is down to earth for all kinds of reasons and truly a family affair.

There are no French fries and you do not miss them. After 4:30 you have to get their garlic rolls…………it is like being in what Blondee calls Food Heaven.

I love the saying you see on all of this restaurants literature from Sonny “With pride we make and bake our hogie rolls the old fashioned way.” Yes, Sonny old fashioned is still so good, in so many ways….
