San Juan Puerto Rico is a wonderful destination for a Caribbean style vacation, with some of the creature comforts many of us enjoy.  San Juan is the Capital of Puerto Rico, which is officially a territory of the United States.  This is great news, as it means that US citizens do not need to have passports to travel, and US dollar bills are the current currency.  Add this to the fact that San Juan is a 2 hour nonstop flight from many east coast cities, and that English is spoken, and you have a terrific location for a vacation.

What a joy it is to experience interesting places and lodging with my fellow Baby Boomers! There is so much to learn about the world and what better way than through travel? We will surely never run out of content to share with you.

About a 6 hour drive from my Kentuckiana home is one of the largest parks, and most popular wedding destinations in the country… in Gatlinburg Tennessee.  Spring (except for a short week or two during spring break) is a great time to visit the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, and enjoy some wonderful outdoor old fashion excitement.

There is one road-trip so remote and obscure only the truly committed to getting lost have made the pilgrimage.  Yellowstone National Park provides a detailed planner (details here) for a wholesome family road trip across the heart of America, beginning in the backyard of the Wild West. All you have to do is pack the car. Start off the trip in the stunning South Dakota Badlands and end six days later in the majestic Yellowstone National Park located on the rustic northern corner of Wyoming on the boarder of Montana. And we know what you’re thinking: where the hell is South Dakota? That is precisely the point. 

Florida is known as the Sunshine State, and as the southernmost state in the continental USA, there are endless stretches of coastline dotted with white sand beaches. Although that’s true, there is so much more to this sunny destination! Head to the Florida Keys and spend a full day in Hemingway’s haunt — Key West. Travel through the natural splendor of the Everglades, stopping the Everglades National Park, an International Biosphere Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage site. This is a prime habitat of alligators and other wildlife so keep your cameras handy! Additionally, this tour stops in Naples, situated on the Gulf of Mexico, historical St. Augustine and Cocoa Beach. This is the year of Diego and Frida.  A historic exhibition, with 70 of the most passionate works by these iconic Mexican artists, opened on March 15 at the Detroit Institute of Art.  On May 16, the first solo exhibition of Frida Kahlo’s work to be seen in New York City in 25 years will open at the New York Botanical Gardens in the Bronx.  The New York exhibition will be the first to focus exclusively on Kahlo's intense interest in the botanical world. Today I wish to focus on perhaps the most influential and important museum in the world for those art lovers!  A trip to the Kelvingrove should remain top on your list along with the British Museum & the Louvre (Paris).  To be honest, I had not realized the wealth of collections ranging from the Impressionists to the famed Glasgow Boys who revolutionized Scottish painting – similar to the Pre-Raphaelites from the United Kingdom.

For the past 90 years the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC has been teaching the lost art of folk crafts in the picturesque mountains of western North Carolina. If you can make it by hand, you can make it here! 

Carlin led us along a scenic hike along the base of a cliff, clambering over a multitude of rocks and the occasional root.  Looking up, there were always towering walls of rock soaring up towards the sky.   We reached this place called “the Anvil” and here we looked up and saw a giant rock formation hanging precipitously over our heads!   I looked around and saw no place to go from here and wondered what Carlin had in mind for us now!  As we took a moment to catch our breath he told us about the rock climbers and how there are several routes up this steep cliff!   In my mind I am saying “are you expecting us to climb up there?”  

You know it has to be close to Paradise, when one of America’s truly richest men at the time buys a part of Heaven on Earth and sets out to create Paradise.
