As boomers we have seen the unfortunate disappearance of many of the smaller local drive-ins, diners, restaurants, and quaint local motels that we grew to love as children. Also many of the small shops and stores have also bitten the dust. I remember the joy of going up to the neighborhood Rexall soda fountain for a chocolate or cherry coke, looking at the latest comic books and then walking down to the Woolworth’s five and dime where I could buy some new toy figures and soldiers that we used in our creation of new worlds in the family den during bad weather.
It is always a great pleasure to find places that provide us a fix from the past, especially ones that are also pet friendly places where we can go with our best friend. The Dairy Kastle located at 575 Eastern Parkway in Louisville, KY is one of these special places. Not far from the University of Louisville the Dairy Kastle has been a Louisville landmark for over 35 years. Sitting on the corner of Eastern Parkway and Bradley Avenue it was at one time a gas station. It is open from 11 am to 10 pm Monday – Saturday and from noon to 10 pm on Sundays.
The two things that the restaurant is primarily known for are its soft serve ice cream and its chili dogs. The soft serve, especially the vanilla, is among the best that I have had anywhere. Another plus is that you can actually get a chocolate malt here – which has pretty much disappeared from the chain shops. The chili dogs are the best I have had in the area and possibly beyond. There are also vegan options, as well as bean chili. Also available are nachos, taco-in-a-bag, pork BBQ, potato salad, kraut and slaw.
The best discovery was the menu item for Susie – the milk bone sundae for only a buck. The sundae consists of the vanilla soft-serve with your choice of small milk bones or a large milk bone on top. Susie elected to get the small milk bones, and because of mentioning the pet patrol, Susie got a few bonus biscuits.
The Dairy Kastle also provided three big water bowls for visiting canines. There is outside seating, in several places including under some big shade trees. Of course there is no inside seating, only an order and pickup window.
Whether you are just passing through, staying in Louisville, or a local resident, this is a place not to be missed especially if you are traveling with your pooch.
