Mai Chau Lodge: Vietnam

$0.00

Quick Overview

Vietnam evokes many thoughts and memories for the Baby Boomers. I remember watching the draft lottery with my college classmates knowing that a lot of my male friends would not make it home. I was so passionate about this war that I wanted to cover it as a news correspondent since I majored in Radio and Television, but it was the 60's and I was told, “no place for a woman to be.” This was a pivotal moment for our generation and somehow, time heals, seasons change and life perseveres. I never dreamed I would be writing a review of a tranquil Lodge 150 km northwest of Hanoi.

Mai Chau Lodge offers the peace and serenity we never thought was possible.

Nestled among limestone mountains and green rice paddies is a Lodge with 16 rooms and one Junior suite overlooking either a mountain or a lake. You are truly entrenched in rural Vietnamese life with many Western amenities. Here there is a blend of ancient culture and breathtaking scenery. The rooms are equipped with Western style bedding, satellite TV, tea/coffee makers and free WiFi. There is also a small outdoor swimming pool and a restaurant that overlooks the lake. Traditional dishes are prepared daily and the menu changes daily as well.

If you are into adventure, tours can be arranged for walking treks, rock climbing and bicycling. There is also a cave across the street from the Lodge. It is inside Mo Luong Bar, where you can stop in for a drink before you proceed to the Cave. The main area holds 400-500 people and there are four caverns. The history is told in the main area and the remainder of the tour requires you to be physically fit. Cost of tour – Five dollars!

If you are into more leisurely activities, you can attend a cooking class or take the Handicraft Tour in Lac Village where lovely scarves are made. You will get a two hour lesson in weaving your own. Now that's a souvenir!

On Sunday, you must visit the local market where you can sample rice wine, buy locally grown produce or purchase handmade items from the area.

Many evenings, you will be entertained by dancing performed and showcasing neighboring tribal communities. You will also be encouraged to participate, so be prepared to bring your dancing skills.

This is a retreat far from the hustle and bustle of the big city and offers you an eco adventure in Vietnam and an immersion in rural life. Let's put the past behind and enjoy the beauty of a sunset as you stroll a rice field.

The Mai Chau Lodge brings peace.
