Quick Overview

Here's one for the train enthusiasts out there and I know a lot of Boomers who are in this category. This will be a nice place to share your passion for the rails with your grandchildren. Located just north of Duluth on the shores of Lake Superior, this 17 room rustic hotel's guest rooms are housed in real train boxcars. All rooms have TV and central air, the larger suites include a fireplace, mini-fridge and microwave. Rates include a continental breakfast which is served in the main building that looks like a Depot. This building is where you check in and also features a lending library of books and games.

The beds are comfy, the rooms are clean, you have wireless internet access and great views since you are surrounded by woods. Don't be surprised to see a deer or moose or both!

Your rail adventure doesn't end here. Nearby is the Lake Superior Railroad Museum, home to the finest collection of Railroad Equipment in the country. There are hands-on exhibits, and if you are visiting in the summer or fall, train excursions are offered. Also in the area is the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad, run entirely by volunteers from July through October. You will take a 1 hour and 40 minute ride spotting bald eagles, loons, swan and blue herons en route. This is a vintage experience in two 1912 passenger coaches and a 1946 engine.

All this excitement is bound to make you hungry, so head back to the hotel and drive over to the world famous Betty's Pies. A staple since 1956, Betty's makes about 300 pies daily and can ship them to your home if you just can't eat another bite. They also serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are many other food establishments in the area with a variety of menus, so be sure and explore the area.

Speaking of exploring, you won't run out of activities here. In the summer, there is fishing, golfing, hiking, canoeing and boating. In the winter months, you can go ice fishing, snowshoeing, ice skating or dog sledding (bet you haven't done that in a while, or ever!) How about riding through their snowmobile trail system or visiting Gooseberry Falls, the gateway to the North Shore? There is also a Lighthouse in Two Harbors and scenic drives at every turn.

There are many events, festivals and marathons in the area, so be sure and check with the hotel before you go.

Bring out your inner Hobo and call the Northern Rail Train Car Hotel – you'll be right on “track!”
