Nostradamus slept here! Bet you don't hear that very often when checking into a hotel. Well, in this case, not only Nostradamus, but Noblemen and Royalty have rested their heads at the Domaine Des Escaunes in the Provence region of France. Located in the small French village of Sernhac, you will find yourself surrounded by Vineyards and Olive trees. In fact, the 23 rooms here are each named for a different variety of grape. In addition, you are only 45 minutes from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, the most famous of the Cotes du Rhone wines.

Built in the 16th century, there are many interesting qualities to this property. Each room has its own design – from quirky to modern to romantic. Some have balconies and terraces, and they do come equipped with the modern amenities of a flat screen TV, hair dryers and free WiFi.

There is a restaurant available for the nights you want to stick around the hotel. The chef offers a 4 course menu daily featuring local, fresh and seasonal produce and I suggest you experience it at least once during your stay.

There is a beautiful stone pool on the grounds as well as a walled garden with Roman fountains. Bike rental is available and a great way to view the surrounding area.

You are located near the towns of Arles, Nimes and Avignon. Arles is where Vincent Van Gogh  lived for one year from 1888 to 1889 and in that time produced over 300 paintings and drawings including “Yellow Room” and “Starry Night Over the Rhone” to name a few. There is much history to be explored here dating from about 800 BC.

Visit Nimes to see the Roman Amphitheatre, the Musee des Beaux-Arts and the Pont du Gard. Then on to Avignon to view the Gothic architecture of the Pope's Palace and of course the Pont Saint Benezet – come on, sing along with me, “sous le pont d'Avignon” - yes, that's the bridge. The hosts are available to create itineraries to suit your thirst for the history of the area.

They do offer an airport shuttle for a fee and some of the rooms are handicap accessible. This hotel is also pet friendly. The rates are reasonable and the area is historic. The Domaine Des Escaunes exudes the charm of Provence and a love of wine with a story to tell – go and write your own tale.
