When most of us visit California, we are likely heading to Los Angeles, San Diego or up north to San Francisco, but if you would like to experience something a bit more unique, how about Morro Bay?

Morro Bay is located about half way between Los Angeles and San Francisco and is well worth the drive from either direction. This is a working fishing village with plenty of charm and activity.

The place to stay is the Anderson Inn located on the Embarcadero. There are only 8 rooms, so be sure to plan well in advance of your visit. All the rooms have private balconies, coffee makers, a small fridge and free WiFi. The Harbor rooms have a fireplace and spa tub, but all the showers have multiple shower heads for a luxe cleanse. You will also find binoculars in your room just in case a few seals happen by. The Inn also offers massage and spa services. The best part of the Inn is that it is family run and the Anderson family will treat you like royalty. Their restaurant, The Galley Seafood Grill and Bar is located harbor side for amazing views. It’s been around since 1966, just like most of us Boomers!  Be sure to bring your credit cards, because the Inn also has a Gallery filled with American made crafts.

The one thing you can’t miss at Morro Bay is Morro Rock, the Gibraltar of California. This distinct rock formation is 581 feet tall, 50 acres and part of an extinct volcano peak. Your room binoculars will come in handy as you spot birds, sea lions, sea otters and seals.

The area offers many activities. There are several beaches to visit, as well as sailing, kayaking, fishing and hiking. There’s the Morro Bay Wine Trail for wine tasting and vineyard tours and Hearst Castle is a short thirty minute drive up the coast. Bike rentals are available to scout out the area and there are museums, art galleries and shopping to round out the recreation.

In addition to The Galley, there’s a great café that’s been in the neighborhood since 1942. Dorn’s is located on Market Avenue and offers magnificent views of the Rock www.dornscafe.com

The views are not the only good thing about Dorn’s. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner and have lots of inventive menu items.

So, if I’ve convinced you to hop in your car, travel Highway 1 and see what the City of Morro Bay has to offer, I hope you contact the Anderson family and book the best room in town. You’ll be glad you did!
