When we try to share our heritage with our grandchildren, many us can trace our roots to the enchanting land of Ireland.  Who doesn’t celebrate St. Patrick’s Day or wear green!  I would encourage you to just plan a three week trip to Ireland, to truly engage this beautiful land, and meet these most friendly people.  40% of the population is under the age of 25!

I have been traveling to Ireland for the past seventeen years, and I vividly remember visiting the sectarian neighborhoods and seeing the display of the orange or green flags which reflected their support for the IRA (Catholic/Republican) versus the Protestants/Loyalists.  The neighborhoods looked identical and the people all looked the same, as I was dumbfounded to understand the rivalry and hatred that led to such death and destruction for so many of these families.  Should you take a Black Taxi Tour, which I highly recommend, you will be given a good perspective and tour the neighborhoods and see the art work on the building facades which depicted this struggle.  To truly understand this country, you must understand what lies beneath the surface of these courageous people.

When in Belfast, a trip to the new Titanic Museum should be top on your list.  You will see Samson & Goliath, the twin shipbuilding icons that dominate the entire city skyline.  Throughout the year there are scheduled events so be sure to check with the Tourist Office for  I would also encourage you to visit the City Hall and note the Sculpture of Queen Victoria who in 1888 designated Belfast as a city.

Since Ireland is such an amazing country to visit, I shall give you some pointers from my personal experience as to how to tour this beautiful land.  Though they do have a train and bus system, I prefer to travel by rented car.  Some guidelines for travel include:

1. Though there is a rail and bus system, unless you are traveling to a major city, it will take you forever to arrive at your destination.

2. I recommend renting a car but remember you do drive “on the opposite side of the road.”  Stick shifts will save you approximately 30%. You will adjust and get used to it, so no worries.

3. The countryside is magnificent, but the roads are narrow, and two- way.  You will only be able to go at 40 mph.  Roads wind, so be sure you “honk” as you proceed around, slowly and carefully.

4. When getting cash, the best rates for return are the ATM machines – but remember your bank may charge a fee for each withdrawal and if so, be sure you get enough and put in your money belt for safety.  You can also check as some Banks do not charge transaction fees.  The most expensive is money exchange places at the airports.

5. Note that in Northern Ireland, where Belfast is located, they use the British Sterling whereas in the rest of Ireland they use the Euro.

6. Take note of the signs when driving.  When you see a number with KM after, this refers to kilometers.  When you see just the number, this refers to miles.  Ireland is in the process of converting the KM to miles so you will see a mixture.

7. Be sure you have plenty of maps or a GPS system.  Any of the central Travel Offices will have these guides available for you and the staff is very helpful in helping you plan your itinerary.

8. You can also purchase OPW ticket passes which will give you free entrance to any of the government run museums, parks, gardens, castles or buildings.  Certainly worth it for those of you who love the art galleries and enjoy visiting the castles that are found outside the major cities all over the country.  The Travel Office can also help you plan a special “Castle Tour” - you need just ask!

Because Ireland is such an exceptional and beautiful land, one must take the time to travel by car, visit with the locals to truly capture the spirit of this ancient Celtic society!

I am planning a trip for my grandchildren, and will do so through the eyes of wizards, druids and poets!  William Butler Yeats is on their plate today as they begin their journey!

Happy Travels!
