Not bad, you say? Well, look around the room at your fireplace, French doors opening out to your patio, a feather bed and oversized tubs – it is laid back California style at its best.
As you take a stroll around the grounds, you will inhale the aroma of lavender blossoms, view the majestic mountains as you pass the Meditation garden and soaking pool and simply bask in the Tuscan feel of your surroundings.
But wait, the city of Carmel beckons just minutes away and when the valet pulls your car around, you'll find bottles of water provided as a courtesy, in your car. Drive to Carmel Beach and take a stroll on the beautiful white sand – bring your bathing suit or wet suit if you're a surfer or a picnic lunch to just enjoy the beautiful view. Speaking of views, a must on your visit is 17 Mile Drive – there is a nominal toll charge, but you get a map and some of the most spectacular scenery that will take your breath away. You will drive past magnificent mansions, the famous Pebble Beach and spot sea otters and seals. Bring your camera and be prepared to take videos as you stop and
pass the Lone Cypress, Bird Rock and stunning cliff side ocean views – truly nature at its finest!
But let's not forget shopping – Ocean Ave. is the Rodeo Drive of Carmel and you will find several art galleries and boutiques carrying hand crafted items and beautiful apparel to add to your collection. Carmel Plaza is along the route with 35 shops and restaurants so be sure and bring your credit card.
Now surely all that shopping, walking on the beach and driving for miles has made you hungry and what better place to eat than back at the Bernardus Lodge. Their restaurant, Marinus, winning awards from Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast and Zagat is fine dining at the highest level. The chef calls the cuisine California Natural and uses seasonal and local products in his dishes. Of course, there is an extensive wine list to pair with your selections and outstanding ambiance and service.
It's another beautiful day at the Bernardus Lodge and the question is what should I do today? Well, there's tennis, horseback riding, bocce ball, croquet, or time at the Spa. Have you ever had a Chardonnay pedicure? Well, neither did I until I arrived here. The only time I remember seeing feet touch grapes was in an “I Love Lucy” episode. The Spa is known for it's vinotherapy treatments. They provide you with slippers, towels and luxurious robes and a list of services too numerous to mention – check it out.
This destination is worth exploring and the Bernardus Lodge with its 57 suites and 360 degree views is the place to stay. You do need a big budget to enjoy this resort, but it is definitely worth the splurge. Many Hollywood celebrities come here for a getaway, and if you want to know who, you'll just have to make a reservation!
