So much has been written about Paris, one can never do justice in describing this magnificent city! No matter if you pre-plan your itinerary or just show up, you will not be disappointed!

I will be planning a trip with my granddaughter and have chosen to do so during her winter break from school – though it can be very cold in Paris.  I prefer fewer crowds and less traffic, for during the summer months it can be very hot, humid and crowded!

The list is endless as to what museums to visit and what to see.  The main destinations include: Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Montmartre (artist community),  Sacre-Coeur Basilica, Arc de Triomphe, Tomb of Napoleon, Moulin Rouge & Cabaret, Notre Dame, Orangerie Museum - featuring Monet's magnificent water lilies and home to a fine collection of other works by Renoir, Matisse, Picasso and more.

When I visit the Louvre, I generally have a pre-planned itinerary as to what I want to see.  On my first visit, the Mona Lisa, Winged Victory and Venus de Milo were my top selections.  I get a map and head off to view these first, and then returned to get a “headphone” tour guide and proceed through the museum on my own time schedule.

The Museum d’Orsay is my very favorite – it is smaller and more manageable than the Louvre.   When I visit the d’Orsay, upon entering, I have to stand still to soak up the genius of these magnificent sculptures!  I always think what has happened to man … his genius of such glorious works of art? Aren’t there such artists living today?

A river cruise is also enchanting – especially when you are passing Notre Dame with “Ave Maria” playing in the background. In addition to the museums and river cruises, the hop on hop off bus always is a “must do” on my list, for it gives one an overview of the city, and I always mark off those areas I wish to explore in more detail.

The iconic symbol of Paris is the Eiffel Tower.  There are four restaurants and the most elegant is the Le Jules Verne with a grand cuisine.  Reservations are a must and now you can make a reservation online.  The 58 Tour Eiffel is also great for lunch and they also offer dinner.  The Eiffel Tower has three platforms and 3 lifts, plus 704 stairs!  If you are adventurous, it is fun to walk down.  I did some years ago, but from the second level, not the top!!

Purchasing in advance a Paris City Passport will give you more savings when visiting museums/tours/river cruises.  As to visiting the Eiffel Tower – there are always long lines, so it is advisable to obtain entry tickets before hand.

Depending on your schedule, it is always fun to visit the fashion shops and top on my list is Printemps and Galeries LaFayette.

If you have an extra day or two, I highly recommend a visit to Versailles and also Monet’s Giverny Gardens – about a 45 minute ride outside Paris.

Happy Travels!
