The Sunset Motel: Brevard, North Carolina

Quick Overview

I have such fond recollections of traveling with my parents as a child and staying in motels on our summer vacation travels. Sadly, those establishments have all but vanished and we are left with high rise properties. Don't get me wrong, I love to crawl in those plush beds and have the amenities, but sometimes, I long for the feel of the bygone era. Well, fear not, there are a few nostalgic places left and here's one that I think you will love. Not only is it in a wonderful location, but it will bring back a lot of memories.

Welcome to the Sunset Motel, a retro motel located about 6 blocks from downtown Brevard and near the Pisgah National Forest and other nature attractions. Brevard is known as the “Land of Waterfalls” with over 250 waterfalls. It is also home to the white squirrel – they even have a yearly White Squirrel Festival. Ask the locals how these squirrels came to be – there are a lot of different stories.

The Sunset Motel has a variety of accommodations. There is a cottage that can sleep 6 with a wrap-around deck and grill. There is an efficiency, an apartment, as well as queen rooms and suites. There are a lot of fun places to eat: drive-ins, pizza parlors, barbeque, mexican and asian cuisines. However, if you want to keep with the retro theme, you must visit Rocky's Soda Shop. They have the best malts, milkshakes, floats, hamburgers, and hot dogs around. Sit down at the lunch counter and enjoy the experience as well as the food. Visit the candy shop with all your old favorites from the 50's and 60's.

There are many activities in the area, so if shopping, antiquing and visiting art galleries are just not enough, there is a lot of outdoor fun you can have. Climbing, kayaking, fly fishing, hiking, cycling and waterfall tours, to name a few. Take a ride to Flat Rock and visit the Carl Sandberg House. It is a National Historic Site and is open 7 days a week. There are 5 miles of trails and no fee to tour the grounds. The guided house tour is $5 for adults and $3 for seniors.
