In the middle of a neighborhood in Louisville Kentucky is a Historic Home… Locust Grove. The home was built in the 1790’s, and is on a beautiful piece of property. General George Rodgers Clark came to this home, which was his sister’s, when his health was failing him. He had a bedroom on the first floor of the house. It is said that General Clark spent many hours sitting on the back porch looking at the Ohio River.
The historic home has gone through many changes over the years. It is not wheelchair accessible, but the museum, film and wonderful gardens are open to everyone. They actually have a video tour of the house if you are mobility challenged. The museum is fully accessible, and has many artifacts from the time period.
The home often has special events like the reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th. A number of people were costumed in period dress, and having lively conversations about being free from England. Some events take place on the porch, or even in the museum area/ Locust Grove also hosts reenactment days, tastings, and a wonderful Christmas celebration. The home is a feast for the senses during these celebrations. Locust Grove also has a number of stories about ghosts roaming around the house during sunset.
One of our favorite things to do at Locust Grove is to pack a picnic, and enjoy the gardens and other buildings on site. We sometimes take our dogs on leash through the hiking trails in the back of the property. The gardens have been expanded, and now are a wonderful addition to the house. Beyond the buildings and the gardens there is a grave yard, and a stream running through the property. The apple orchard near the front of the house is a great site for picnics, but there are also picnic tables near the museum.
Locust Grove is open year round. The house is open 10-4:30 Monday – Saturday, and various times on Sunday. The outside areas are sometimes used for weddings and parties so check the schedule before visiting the home. Take some time and check out some of the Kentucky History at Locust Grove.
