Each year, more and more people are discovering the value and pleasure of voyages to some of the most beautiful and culturally enriching places in the world.  In fact, last year alone approximately seven million people enjoyed cruise vacations.  With the large number of cruise lines today, the diversity of ships and myriad of itineraries, you can go on several different cruises and have a different experience on each.  It’s no surprise then, that I am often asked, “how do I choose the cruise that’s right for me?”.

Confused about all the options and choices regarding dining preferences, shore excursions, stateroom categories and itineraries?  Don’t know how to select the right cruise line, ship size or destination?  Well, a perfect cruise starts with a plan, so consider these questions when planning your next trip:

#1 - Is a cruise right for you?  If you’ve never cruised before, think about why you might want to cruise and factor in your expectations.  You’ll find that most cruise ships are similar to floating resorts – a complete vacation in one convenient package.  You only have to unpack one time, you can enjoy many onboard dining options (most already included in the price), you can choose to be busy or do nothing and still feel satisfied.  Watch Broadway-style shows and participate in other exciting entertainment options, sleep while traveling to the next destination, know most of your costs upfront, and you typically get to visit several destinations on one trip

#2 – Which cruise line is right for you?  Think about what you want to get out of the cruise.  Each cruise line and ship has its own personality and ambience and it needs to fit you and others who will be traveling with you.  Today it’s common to see multi-generational families traveling together.  If that’s the case, you will want to consider ships that have family-friendly features, various dining options, kid’s clubs, and activities that each age group will enjoy.  Many cruise lines such as Carnival, Disney, Norwegian, Royal Caribben and Princess offer great children’s programs with qualified staff to watch over your little ones (infant to teen), while you relax.

If you want an active and fun experience, consider Carnival, Norwegian or Royal Caribbean that have an upbeat feel and lots of onboard activities, with special features like rock-climbing walls and skating rinks.  If your goal is to be pampered a bit, then you might consider a premium cruise line such as Celebrity or Azamara; for a nostalgic yet relaxed upscale experience think about Holland America or Cunard; or for a luxury line you might consider Oceania, Crystal, Paul Gauguin, Regent Seven Seas or Silversea.    Whatever your cruise dreams may be – picking the right cruise line is the first step in making those dreams a reality!
