Located on the corner of Exchange and Congress streets in the Old Port District is The Press Hotel. This structure was the former Press Herald Building founded in 1921 and they pay homage to the business of journalism starting with vintage typewriters in the lobby, typewriter keys in the elevator and a printing press theme throughout.
This is a boutique style hotel with a total of 110 rooms that vary in size.
Each room has a 1920s journalist's desk, mini-fridge, flat screen HDTV, free WiFi, free water bottles, daily newspaper, Keurig coffee and tea machine and more.
There is also a fitness center that provides free trail mix. Bike rentals are available to tour the surrounding area. You can take your bike to the Portland Head Lighthouse.
The location couldn't be better and is within walking distance of an array of activities. There is much to see and do in Portland. East End Beach is the only public beach in Portland. Pack a picnic lunch and watch the boats go by. You can go kayaking less than a half mile from the hotel. There's a lot of great shopping in the area: antiques, jewelry, pottery studios, specialty shops and art galleries. Visit breweries, do wine tasting and eat lots of lobster!
Portland also has a variety of Harbor cruises and Walking tours for some lessons in history. By all means, do not miss the Wadsworth-Longfellow House, Maine's first house museum open to the public. Take a guided tour of Winslow Homer's Studio which was declared a national landmark in 1966. Portland was once a trading and fishing settlement and much of the flavor and architecture still remains.
I haven't mentioned much about food, but the Union restaurant in the hotel serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Do not skip the lobster eggs benedict for breakfast, it's a real treat! Then there's something to drink and the hotel has the aptly named Inkwell, which serves coffee and pastries from 7-11AM and hand-crafted cocktails from 4PM-1AM.
There are many restaurants and bars within walking distance of the hotel to add variety to your stay.
