The Downton Abbey craze is the latest out-shoot of the world's romance with England's great Stately Homes. Jeremy Irons became famous because of his role as Charles Ryder, and Anthony Andrews, Julia Quick, Clare Bloom and the venerable Lord Laurence Olivier graced the screen bringing these larger than life characters into our homes and hearts.
“Brideshead Revisited” a tome by Evelyn Waugh (a man!), riveted the country back in his day. Not only did he touch on the issue of homosexuality, adultery, bisexuality, and religious wars between Protestants (rulers) and Catholics, it was combustible reading.
The glorious CASTLE HOWARD near York, in an outer corner of Yorkshire, became Brideshead for the duration. And if you make the pilgrimage to that corner of the world, you won't be disappointed. As a luxury patrol traveler, I am sure you get a kick, as do I, in visiting Palaces, Castles, Homes, Villas, Mansions, Palazzos and every form of shelter preferred by the super-rich. Built in the18th Century, Castle Howard was designed by famed architect Sir John Vanbrugh, who was the genius behind the revolutionary new design of Castle Howard. The Howard Family is one of England's oldest aristocratic families. In fact, Katherine Howard was one of Henry VIII's wives, so a noble family in a Royal way.
Castle Howard, like all great Homes centuries old, evolved over successive reigns. Family members went on "Grand Tours through Europe," which led to the acquisition of great works of art, sculpture, furniture and other treasures which are now on display in this magnificent setting. The sheer size and stature of the House will take your breath away; the vision and fortitude of the people who created it are beyond imagination. And this magnificent majestic house is set in acres of the most glorious English countryside. The tranquility and romance of Castle Howards's sweeping parkland; breathtaking vistas dominated by temples and statues, with splendid fountains and lakes will remind you of a time of pure gentility.The famous Rose Gardens provide a sheltered paradise of color and intoxicating perfume, which Ray Wood entices wit serpentine pathways for the more adventurous traveler.
Walk the long hallways, marvel at the Ballroom, the dining room seating 100+ for formal dinners; pretend you're invited for a Hunting or Shooting weekend in this countryside Palace. Castle Howard has it all, so on that journey through the North of England, perhaps on the way to Scotland, a detour through the ancient city of York and out to Castle Howard will be its own reward.
There are many ways to get there, all by land, but for the helicopter one can charter in the area. Except for York, there are no major hotels in the area, so choose a central Hotel/Inn/Pub, and become part of the local landscape. I assure you, it's a journey worth taking.
