Ahh – spring is in the air, the stores have the bathing suits on display – it must be time for Spring Break! Back in the day, we all headed south to Ft. Lauderdale. Now, it seems Mexico is the place to be on either coast. Well, that is all well and good, we had our time to party, but we still want to experience Spring Break, just perhaps not in the same way we did in our twenties. Winter has had its way with us, so we long for some sun and fun, but don’t necessarily want to be where the “kids” are. Well, I have just the spot for you!
Head to Jekyll Island, a small barrier island off the coast of Georgia, and only one and half hours from Jacksonville, Florida. This is a place that has the type of activities you long for after hibernating all winter. There are beaches, golf, tennis, bicycling, fishing, kayaking, boating and horseback riding – what more could you want? How about carriage rides through the historic district and a lovely hotel that is a National Historic Landmark? The Jekyll Island Club is listed in the top 500 resorts in the world by Travel & Leisure magazine. The hotel was founded in 1886 and purchased for $125,000 and used as a club for wealthy industrialists such as the Rockefellers and Vanderbilts. It was later restored and reopened in 1985 as a luxury resort.
This property has a private beach club with a complimentary shuttle to the beach. There is a spa and fitness center, however there are 25 miles of bike trails next to the property, so you may not need to use the fitness center. Bike rentals are available at the hotel. If you want something less strenuous, how about croquet, Sunday dinner dances or afternoon tea? There’s always cocktails on the porch at sunset. The Jekyll Island Club has 2 restaurants and a bar/lounge. There is free WiFi, coffee/tea service and a fridge in your room and free public parking. You are near the Georgia Sea Turtle Center and let’s not forget shopping in the historic district and Beach Village.
So, have I convinced you to take a Boomer Spring Break? If so, visit the Jekyll Island Club Hotel. They offer AAA and AARP discounts. There is a modest resort fee, so be aware of the additional cost. The rates are reasonable for a grand property in a unique island setting. Play like the Rockefellers and Vanderbilts – you have earned the right.
