Hotel Viking: Newport, Rhode Island

Quick Overview

I love visiting Newport, Rhode Island any time of the year, but summer and fall are especially my favorites. Little Rhody may be the smallest State in the union, but it has a lot to offer – the ocean, clam chowder, lobsters, history, mansions and the list goes on. You can fly into TF Green airport in Providence and be in Newport in about 30 minutes.

You'll need a place to stay, so I suggest trying the newly renovated Hotel Viking. It was built in 1926 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Location is important because you want to be near all the sights and this hotel has the perfect spot. It is within walking distance of Bowen's Wharf, where you will find quaint shops, art galleries and restaurants.

Another fun area is Bannister's Wharf with more shops, wharf cruises and home to my very favorite place in the world to have Clam Chowder, the Black Pearl. http://www.blackpearlnewport.com/  I stop in there every night I'm in Newport for their chowder, I love it so much!

The Hotel Viking is also about a mile from the Cliff Walk and the Mansions of Newport.

Even if you have visited before, you'll want to do it again. The Cliff Walk is magnificent as are the Mansions. It's hard to believe they were considered to be summer cottages to the families who owned them.

Back at the hotel, there is a heated indoor pool, bar and restaurant, roof garden, health club and spa. They have live music on the weekends and are also about a five minute drive to Easton’s Beach.

Hotel Viking has free WiFi and also offers free rides within a two mile radius of the property. Coffee and tea are served in the common areas and there are free newspapers in the lobby. Be aware that resort fees apply, the bathrooms tend to be small and there is a parking fee.

Newport is home to many events: Newport Jazz Festival, Newport Folk Festival, Hall of Fame Tennis Championships and so much more. There is always something to do and see here. So, pack your bags and take a trip to Rhode Island, but be sure and stop in Newport for a few days and make the Hotel Viking your home. This is a real piece of New England history, so make some of your own!
