There are surprises at every turn when it comes to travel and here's one I only recently stumbled upon. I don't even know where to begin because this property has so much to offer. Whether you are traveling alone, with the grand kids or with other family members, you are sure to find something that keeps you coming back.
Located in Wheeling, West Virginia, a city that has been deemed a federally designated National Heritage Area, Oglebay sits on 1,700 acres. This tradition began over a hundred years ago as the summer estate of Earl W. Oglebay. In the 1920's Mr. Oglebay gave this property to the City of Wheeling – what a guy!
It would be easier for me to tell you what this property does NOT have, but that list would be zero. Where else can you go that has the following all in one place? Miles of walking and jogging trails; tennis courts, a 5,000 square foot spa, a Zoo that sits on 30 acres with 85 species of animals; horse stables; 4 golf courses; miniature golf course; indoor and outdoor pools; fishing; pedal boats; Segway tours; 16 acre gardens, a Glass museum, the Mansion Museum, an environmental education center – what – you want more? Well, I haven't even mentioned the lodging opportunities. The Wilson Lodge has 271 rooms, suites and chalets. There are 54 cottages, 4 estate houses and 3 eight bedroom premium cottages. The rooms have wireless internet and LCD TVs and range in price according to the location. Talk about an amazing getaway or family reunion spot. I haven't even discussed food! There is a Dining Room at the Lodge overlooking Schenk Lake and a more casual Grill.
There is also a Grill overlooking the 18th hole at the Golf Clubhouse in addition to in-room dining, pizza delivery and seasonal refreshment stands around the property. Whew – there's no way to be bored at this property!
Oglebay is a year-round resort with seasonal activities, festivals and celebrations. Springtime brings the Annual Antiques Show and Sale. The summer abounds with outdoor concerts and holiday revelry. In the Fall, there is an annual arts and crafts festival. The winter is filled with those who love to ski and snowboard, because of course there is an area for that as well at Oglebay! The Festival of Lights which runs from the beginning of November to the beginning of January has been listed as one of the 10 best Christmas Light Displays in the United States.
I suggest you go online, pick up the phone or just get in your car and start driving. Oglebay Resort and Conference Center has something for everyone in a budget that is affordable for a visit you won't soon forget. Being a boomer, I recommend you not visit at the peak travel times unless the grand kids are with you – less noise and traffic and you have the flexibility.
