One of Susie’s doggie buddies out west told her about a giant Beagle wandering around in Idaho. You can’t help but wonder if Paul Bunyan and Babe are also nearby. We decided to check it out and discovered the Dog Bark Park Inn in Cottonwood, Idaho where you can stay and relax comfortably in the doghouse – a bed and breakfast built as a giant wood Beagle. Susie’s daddy calls it the “Trojan Beagle.”

The unique operation was started in the mid 1990’s by husband and wife artists, Dennis Sullivan and Frances Conklin. As chainsaw artists they began sculpting wood dogs and in 1995 they received their big break when QVC television began to sell their creations.  As a result of their resounding success, they had the means to create Dog Bark Park and the Inn.

They specialize in folk-art style wooden carvings in Pine wood. They have created over 60 different breeds and poses of dogs. Susie highly approves! They also will make a custom carving of your favorite canine companion – hmm – Susie will be talking to daddy about this!

The “Doghouse” sleeps four with a Queen sized bed and two twin side-by-side mattresses in the loft. Also provided are a full bath, microwave, small refrigerator, breakfast table, air conditioning, coffee maker in the loft, clock radio, hair dryer, books, games and puzzles. There is no phone or television. You’ll be too busy relaxing and taking in the great view.

A continental breakfast is also provided that includes “The Prairie’s Best Fruited Granola” as well as a variety of teas, coffees, juices, fresh fruit, boxed cereals, milk, yogurts, cheeses, hard-boiled eggs, bagels and home-baked pastries.

Most important to Susie and Beau is the fact that responsible pets with their well-behaved humans are welcome to stay with prior approval. A $15 fee is charged per pet for your stay. Advanced reservations are required.

Dog Bark Park is in the heart of the Camas Prairie where wheat, barley, canola, blue grass & hay are the dominant crops. Cottonwood, 924 population & the second largest community on the prairie, has a compact downtown regional medical center, Bureau of Land Management field office& nearby Monastery of St. Gertrude. The Inn is located on us Hwy 95. The scenery en-route from any direction is spectacular.

The Dog Bark Park also has a workshop and gift shop. Their website also lists the different dog breeds available carved in wood with size options. Susie of course asked to see the Aussie carvings.

Susie isn’t clear yet on how much there is to do for dogs so until she gets a chance to visit herself she will give it an initial three paws rating. Daddy, Susie and Beau are planning several future pet patrol ventures out west and the Dog Bark Park will be on the list to check out.
