Comfort Inn & Suites: Grenada, Mississippi

Quick Overview

Recently we had the unfortunate need to travel to Beaumont, Texas for a family funeral.  Since this amounted to a journey of 950 miles each way, it was imperative for us to stop for the night along our route.  We were looking for somewhere to divide up the trip into a two day drive, and Grenada, Mississippi was a little more than half-way.

Susie was happy that she was able to travel with both her Momma and Daddy, and it was easier and less expensive to have her along anyway. She also provided comfort for us along the way and served her purpose as a therapy dog once again. It was necessary to find accommodations that were both pet friendly and handicapped accessible. Our friend and partner, Liz, who is the face of the Hotel Patrol, graciously found our hotels along the way and was able to secure rooms in both Grenada and Beaumont.

In Grenada, MS we had reservations at the Comfort Inn & Suites, located at 255 SW Frontage Road, Grenada, MS, 38901. We actually wound up staying in the same room both on our way down to Beaumont as well as on the return trip home to Louisville, KY. The room was clean and comfortable, although a bit on the small side for the two queen-sized beds. Susie approved and settled in on my bed as usual.

The hotel only charged a $25 pet fee for both nights of our stay which is quite reasonable. Susie was made to feel welcome and even handled the elevator to the second floor well. Because we also required a handicapped friendly room it put us on the second floor – usually pet friendly rooms are on the first floor. Also there was plenty of green space around the hotel for Susie to take care of the call of nature – and of course we had our own poopy bags.

The hotel provided a good Wifi connection that was easy to set up to provide my needed internet connectivity. There was also a nice HD television with a good selection of programming. The room also had a small refrigerator and microwave. The bathroom was a decent size and clean.

The hotel also had an indoor pool, a business center with two computer stations, and a full breakfast was provided in a spacious breakfast room. The staff was helpful and friendly. We would definitely return if our travels take us this way again. It would also have been a good stop on the way to New Orleans or the Gulf Coast of Mississippi.

There are plenty of restaurants nearby, but we found that they roll up the sidewalks in Grenada around 9 pm, because to our surprise the Appleby’s appeared to be closed at that time. Some of the fast food restaurants stay open later. On the way down we arrived around 7 pm and found a local place, Jake & Rips, about 2 miles from the hotel, which provided decent fare. Although not memorable, they had barbeque, steaks and seafood. We always prefer a local place if we can find one nearby. On the way back home we arrived at 10 pm and opted for Wendy’s since Appleby’s was closed. There are also a Huddle House and a Waffle House nearby.

Grenada has an interesting history, founded on formerly Choctaw land in the 1830’s; the origin of the name seems to be in question, whether it was a misspelling of Granada, Spain or after a Choctaw word for marriage. You can find out much more about the area on the excellent site provided at http://www.visitgrenadams.com.  The site also details the many outdoor activities available: camping, rv parks, hunting and fishing, golf, hiking, canoeing and kayaking.
