A smothering mattress - for it was far too thick to be a blanket- of enveloping fog and chill morning mist was just beginning to claw its way free from the Earth; as we few, we very few left of the once mighty band of explorers who previously swelled the opulent deck of the Norwegian Pearl peered anxiously towards the East in search of the winged chariot which would soon spirit us to the very apex of the Great White North (or at least to Mendenhall Glacier).
We stared blearily as Dawn’s Early Light broke, nay… shattered the darkness before it ; flinging its blinding spears of light towards us, piercing the clouds as though they were naught but air and vapor ( which, come to think of it… they were).
Whilst the Goddess Aurora’s personal lightshow paced in its stately Pravane through the sky, moving its measured way in a dance begun while the earth was but a babe; there came a resonance – ever growing … louder and louder still, creeping closer and closer still - vibrating the ether all about us, until we felt as though we were being made sport of by some giant feline while it stalked its prey…..
Will our brave survivors make it past the Giant Feline? Or is there even truly a “Feline Menace” at all? Will they EVER get to the Glacier at the Apex of the G.W.N. (well, perhaps never at this storytellers rate, at least NOT in OUR lifetimes)?
