Many Baby Boomers automatically think of Spring Break vacations when they hear Cancun. While that is often true, let me assure you that any other time of year, Cancun is for everyone! I just returned from a week's vacation there and stayed at the Grand Park Royal Cancun Caribe and saw a lot of fellow Boomers enjoying the sun, fun and food.
This property was family friendly and there are others that are adults only, so you can choose what works best for you. It was a real joy to be around a variety of people from all corners of the globe enjoying the same things as I was and you just never know what bonds may form when you are in a friendly environment.
In my case, I traveled with a friend of mine who has never been to an all-inclusive resort or to Cancun. On the flight over, she had a mishap with her knee as she was trying to get out and use the restroom. Let's just say her knee went out of it's socket and back in – ouch! Well, we had to continue and by the time we landed, her knee was quite swollen. After getting our luggage, going through customs and getting our transfers to the hotel, she was in pain. We checked in and then went down to the Buffet to grab some lunch. As she limped down the stairs, a gentleman walked up to her asked what she did to her leg? She explained and he said, “I can fix that, sit down here!” She asked if he was a doctor and he said, no, he was a licensed therapist and could perform accupressure, which he did. Well, to make a long story short, he made it better in a few minutes and continued to give her several more treatments over the course of a few days and her knee was a normal size. Thank you Henry Nguyen from Houston! We spent a lot of our time with he and his family, who are quite charitable and just plain amazing people. So, you see, travel can be fun and you just never know who you will meet.
This property is located in the Hotel Zone, where the beaches don't have the seaweed problem of the Riviera Maya area. The food was terrific and the service was 5 star. I also have to give kudos to the housekeeping staff who kept everything spotless. I spoke to fellow travelers to see if others were enjoying themselves as well and everyone I spoke to seemed thoroughly pleased with their experience. I do have to say, if you book this hotel, pay for the upgrade to the new building, because none of us staying in that section had any problems. Any complaints I heard were from those staying in the main building. There are always pros and cons at every property.
This hotel has a buffet that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are also 3 restaurants that require reservations and also have a dress code. One is Italian, one is Mexican and one is Oriental. If you are a big eater, go for the buffet, because the restaurant portions are European in size, not the massive American portions. I happen to love that, but some people do not.
Be sure and go up to the Equinox Lounge, accessible only by a spiral staircase, above the Italian restaurant. There are Bali beds, comfortable couches and a bartender serving you drinks as you relax gazing at the night sky – really nice.
The location is great, because you can hop on a bus for $1 and go to the shopping malls. My favorite one is La Isla – do not miss it if you are a shopper. It has great stores and a very unique layout.
So, if you have hesitated to visit Cancun, give it a try. An all-inclusive resort takes the thinking out of your vacation. Just order drinks everywhere on the property, eat whatever you want, whenever you want, indulge in gelato everyday and just enjoy the sun and fun. Say “hola” to Cancun!
