Have I got a surprise for you! Who says you have to go overseas to stay in a charming bed and breakfast that also gives you cooking classes? Don't get me wrong, going to Italy, France, Spain, etc. is amazing, but if you don't want to break the bank, go to Cincinnati! Yes, I said Cincinnati, as in Ohio.

Twelve miles from the downtown area is the amiable village of Glendale, population 2,200. It dates back to the 1850's and was the first planned railroad commuter town in the United States and therefore designated a Historic Landmark in 1976 by the Department of the Interior.

There are 6 newly renovated suites each with either a King or Queen bed, Living Room, Kitchen or Kitchenette and Bath. An in-room continental breakfast is provided daily and the owner leaves you little treats in your fridge every day. There are heated towel bars and flat screen TVs. It is decorated with original art and antiques – glass door knobs - can it get any better than that? Why yes it can! They have added a Culinary Studio with gourmet cooking classes. They range from Everyday Gourmet to Culinary Journey to Boot Camp (that's the one I need.) Check their website for class schedules and times.

There is the issue of the trains, so if you're a light sleeper, be forewarned. The beds have TempurPedic mattresses and ear plugs are provided. The owners try to make it as comfortable as possible. Let's face it, when you see the town and the hotel, you'll feel like you've just stepped into a Norman Rockwell painting. The shops, restaurants and bakery in Glendale take you back to a sweeter time in our lives. Black squirrels are common in this area, so there are many artifacts paying homage to these little creatures.

Now don't forget that Cincinnati is just about 20 minutes away, so if you need a bit more activity and excitement, you can visit museums, ballparks, Eden Park, Mount Adams, Fountain Square, lots of shops and terrific restaurants and so much more. Hmmm, sounds like you may have to make more than one trip to the Glendalia.

The hotel does have free WiFi and is also near one of the largest groceries around – Jungle Jim's International Market with over 150,000 products and 200,000 square feet to explore. It's a great place to go after you've taken your cooking classes at the Culinary Studio – you are sure to find everything you need to practice your skills!

As an added bonus, they have a room suitable for small pets – ask for the Procter if you plan to bring your dog – there is no additional charge. Bring your honey, bring your friends, make it an outing – this was a secret until now!
