Generations Riviera Maya Mexico

Quick Overview

Hola! It’s time to think about a beach getaway with the family and by family, I mean multigenerational. It’s about time the travel industry has begun to acknowledge that Baby Boomers like to travel with their kids and grandkids. For the longest time, that meant going to Disneyland and Disney World, which are still great options. However, there are now more choices for this type of family vacation.

I recently traveled to Riviera Maya, just south of Cancun, Mexico to experience just such a property – Generations Riviera Maya – the name says it all. It was built to cater to 3 generations and it does that in spades. It is a beachfront property with very spacious suites, each with their own variety of pools and all facing the ocean. The 144 suites come equipped with spacious areas, 42 inch TVs, DVD players, Jacuzzi tubs, minibars and more. They have 1, 2 and 3 bedroom suites, so you can bring along the whole gang.

People usually complain about food at all-inclusive properties, but not here! I found the food to be first rate and extremely fresh. One reason is that they have a massive greenhouse where they grow their own vegetables. Be sure and take a tour – it’s quite impressive. I ate several meals at the Chef Market and each time I walked in, they asked if I had any food allergies – they cater to all kinds of diets and food restrictions. There is also a Mediterranean restaurant, a Pan Asian, a Wine Kitchen restaurant and Tasting Room, swim-up bar and snack areas. Of course, you can also order room service.

If you want to be pampered at the spa, they can accommodate that as well. They have special treatments for those 4-12 years of age, as well as couples massages and individuals.

There is an impressive kids program, and for the people I asked who were there with their families, they all seemed to be extremely happy with the offerings. There is an EKO Kids Club (4-12) with a library, craft area, gaming consoles, movies and learning activities. EKO Chefs offer pasta classes, tamale making, sushi classes, shaved ice, greenhouse harvest and much more. There’s a treasure hunt area for the older kids. There is also a Nanny service (extra charge) if the adults want to get away for wine tasting or other activities.

The beach is small, but well maintained and as an extra bonus, you have your own butlers, one during the day and one at night. There is also a butler’s lounge to assist you.

There are a few kinks, but the property is sure to work them out. The phone calls to the U.S. are free, but I was never able to accomplish that, even with the help of my butlers, who tried very hard. The floors are marble and very slick in the suites, so be sure and watch out for that. There is a lot of walking for those that might need assistance, so be aware.

That being said, if you want to bring the entire family to a place that has something for everyone, look into Generations Riviera Maya. It is not for the budget conscious, but it offers a variety for all ages.
