I honestly don't know how I've been in travel this long and have never been to the island of Jamaica, but somehow I missed it. Lucky for me, the Jamaica Tourist Board gave me the opportunity to make a visit to Montego Bay and Ocho Rios and I'm so happy they did.
Jamaica is located in the western Caribbean and is about the size of Connecticut. There are waterfalls, mountains and lots of flora, fauna and history. There is so much to see and do here that you will definitely want to stay for at least a week. It is family friendly, couples friendly and Boomer friendly. Since there is much to share, I will start the first in a series of articles to tell you about where I stayed and why I loved it so.
I was a guest at the Melia Braco Village, a family friendly property located about 45 minutes from the airport in Montego Bay. What struck me about this all-inclusive property is that it was not a high-rise, it was as its name suggests, a Village. The buildings are plantation style and 3 levels. It is an oceanfront resort with 232 rooms and suites. The property is laid out as a village with cobblestone streets and an intimate vibe. You never have to get on an elevator and you are greeted at every turn with a friendly and helpful staff.
The minute you are on the property, you are automatically hooked up to WiFi – it was like magic! And if you upgrade to the LEVEL, which is the resort's premium room category, you are given a cell phone, have private check-in and check-out services, a private pool, a private beach area and a Lounge that you can visit with concierge services. There they have a private restaurant for breakfast lunch and dinner and premium liquors along with coffee and tea service throughout the day.
My room faced the ocean and had a balcony, but I prefer to call it a porch because it was bigger than most balconies I've had in the past. It also had 2 rocking chairs and an accordian-style hangar to put your wet swimsuits on to dry. The beds were super comfy and you also had a pillow menu so you would be assured a good night's rest. There was also a coffee maker, fridge, sofa and flat screen TV. There was a lot to room to spread out. The bathroom was ample and only had a shower, which was great.
I toured the other side of the property and the feel and look of the rooms were very similar without the additional amenities, so if you're traveling with a family, don't hesitate to stay on the other side of the resort to save some money. You have the same ocean and a very large pool and access to all the restaurants and shops.
