What do Doris Day, Betty Grable, Jack Benny, John Wayne and Spencer Tracy all have in common? They have all been guests at the El Rancho Hotel in Gallup, New Mexico.
This is another iconic property along Route 66 with a great history – the hotel is particularly known for its use as a base camp for Western Movies made in the 1930s and 1940s. If you’re a big western movie buff, this is the place for you to feel like John Wayne, or at least sleep in his bed. All the rooms are named after the stars that slept there. They made over 100 movies during this time period and they are still making movies here today.
Built in 1937 by D.W. Griffith’s brother, R. E. Griffith, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The rooms are clean, but the look is dated, or should I say quirky, because it is how we Boomers remember motel rooms to be. This is part of the nostalgic feel, so just be aware you are there for the history of the Western movies, not a modern hotel feel. A tip – ask to see your room beforehand.
There is a restaurant on the property that features Mexican food as well as American standards like steak and ribs. Their bar, the 49er Lounge was named by Esquire magazine as one of the best bars in America. Errol Flynn used to ride his horse into this bar. I mean, you have to try it, right?
There is an outdoor pool and an Indian jewelry store with items made by local artists from the Navajo, Hopi and Zuni tribes. If you venture into downtown Gallup, you’ll find over a hundred Trading Posts and galleries. Gallup is rich in Native American culture.
You are also within driving distance of the Grand Canyon, Aztec Ruins National Monument and the Gila Cliff Dwellings. There is hot air ballooning, biking and a High Desert Trail System, not to mention, you are on Route 66.
So, if you love Westerns and feel nostalgic, stop and stay at the El Rancho Hotel and Motel – just remember you are here for the history, not the modern amenities. So saddle up and belly up to the bar, with or without your horse. You’re bound to have a good time!
