Early medieval Cologne was the largest city north of the Alps.  It was ruled by archbishops and a major trading port, located on the Rhine River.  Its landmark attraction is the Cologne Cathedral, which impressed travelers from all over the world and recently won first place in the Travelers’ Choice Award.

The Köln ist ein Gefühl ("Cologne is a Feeling") is the slogan of the local tourist office.  Walking through the streets, visiting the many museums from medieval to more modern times, one cannot escape the fun-loving approach to life that the locals have.  They have the strong Kölsch dialect, their beer of the same name.

I would suggest a tour by minibus as it is a great way to see lots of the city and if you have time, you can return to those destinations you wish to further explore.  I particularly enjoy the great panoramic view along the river bank, dotted with outdoor cafes, clothing and souvenir shops.  Also, if you want to pick up a Cuckoo Clock there are quaint clock shops across from the Cathedral.

Happy Travels!
