Susie has some good news to share with pet owners who travel by rail on Amtrak. Previously a pilot program experimented with including cats and small dogs on select Amtrak routes in Illinois and on the east coast. During the trial last year 2700 pets traveled with their humans.

Now the program has been expanded to select routes nationally, with greater plans to expand the program to more routes in the future.

The rules of the Amtrak pet policy are:

1. Pets are limited to small cats and dogs who along with their carrier can weigh no more than 20 pounds

2. There is a charge of $25 per pet each way with a limit of one pet per passenger

3. Pets must stay with their owner (no cargo or shipping animals)

4. Your pet must stay in the carrier for the entire ride

Amtrak is adding the service to most long distance routes less than seven hours long.

Some differences apply in California until details are worked out.

Unfortunately both Susie and Beau are too big to qualify – at least for now. Susie would love to add it to her repertoire.

You can check for additional information on the Amtrak Pets on Trains page.
