Marbella, deep into Southern Spain, the region known as Andalucía, is one of the world's greatest and most famous resorts for the super-rich and very famous.  Its renewed popularity came with the advent of two concepts spearheaded by several great and famous men.

First. Middle Eastern international financier Adnan Khashoggi, created this beautiful Spanish resort as an international playground by turning a boat dock into a deep water marina fit for the boats of Kings and Princes, movie stars and celebrities. When the work was completed, and one of the most beautifully natural seaports was created, the super-rich Middle Easterners brought their increasingly larger yachts to anchor there. And with them came their entourages, and support services, and all the retailing giants were close behind. Marbella had become a Paradise for Royals, Royal Families and the international jet set.

Seizing the opportunity to create a land magnet - Count Alfred von Hohenlohe and Count von Bismarck joined their considerable fortunes and development skills, and the Marbella Club was formed.  Both of these entities were founded as places for the super-rich and powerful of the world. Membership came with heavy dollar commitments, but the knowledge you were truly one of the privileged, was priceless.

For mere mortals, a trip and a stay in Marbella is one of life's joys and simple pleasures.  Flying into Malaga is simple from any European airport. You can drive there, even ferry there from Gibraltar, but air is faster. The coastline opens up as you speed along, and you will be amazed to see mile upon mile of empty housing rising from hilltops and sweeping down to the sea.  This area was outrageously overbuilt and these empty houses are reminders of the dire consequences Spain's economy suffered in the last economic downturn. But, carrying on to Marbella, the houses become older, more luxurious, and a town starts springing up before you.  Last time I was there I stayed at the famed Incosol Hotel, a luxury Spa and wellness center, perched high on a hilltop with amazing views of the water.  We were a little distant from town, but loved the quiet of this sylvan setting, and knowing that all meals were heart healthy. Sports facilities, a gym, sauna, and all the usual amenities were available at the touch of the telephone.

It's a short ride into town, and there the two must see attractions are the "old town," and "Orange Square." It is like stepping back through time. Marbella was started in the 1600s, and because of its proximity to North Africa, the Moorish imprint is reflected in its ancient architecture. Yes, it's a modern seaside resort for the rich and famous. But, its roots are in history. The reason for the 'orange square' is because the Moors used building materials indigenous to the area. The old town needs to be walked, strolled, or seated at cafe tables to really feel the experience of being in such an ancient city.

The Marina or Puerta Banus is the hub of activity for the city. Giant yachts, or so they seem, are anchored and it is the looky loos who wonder up and down the marina all day. The area is also a hub of nightlife activity, and dawn comes with the first boats raising sails to leave the harbor with motor yachts right behind them. The PB area is filled with restaurants and bars of all types. Shopping from touristy to high end boutiques, whatever you want to enjoy on vacation, go to Marbella you will find it there.

If it's sports you're after - golfing is idyllic in this climate and geography. Also, the views are breathtaking for beginner through pro. Water sports of every kind. If you're into skiing and in the region in the colder months, it's only about 90 minutes to Sierra Nevada where you'll find the runs rival anything in the Alps.

A side trip is the ferry to Gibraltar, and the centuries old argument rages on between Spain and England as to who really owns Gibraltar.  Legend has it that once the Apes leave the Rock, then English Gibraltar will revert to Spanish Rule.  However, I say, Rule Britannia, forever!!!

Marbella is for the rich and famous, and if that's who you are - then make an immediate reservation and be off on the road to Paradise.
