Have you ever dreamed about going on the LOVE BOAT for a trip of a life time? Many people have really become more interested in the cruising options ever sense Captain Stuving and his crew of helpful staff entered our televisions in the 1970s.
For my special needs clients a cruise is often one of the best ways to travel together in a family, or even with a group. The ship design is easy to maneuver, even with a scooter or power chair. Due to the elevators almost every area of the ship is accessible to everyone. Room modifications, including roll in showers, larger doors, and lower sinks are available in some accessible cabins. If your challenges are sight or hearing related, many cruise ships have larger print menus, braille, and assistive hearing devices for performances.
With all of these assets, we began offering the Parkinson’s Creativity Cruise last spring. A group of Parkinson’s patients and friends gathered together for an exciting cruise to Cozumel. While on board we had time for special activities (including a jewelry making class and a book reading) and a special tour of COZUMEL. The group also had plenty of time to relax, play in the casino or pool deck, enjoy meals, and connect with one another. It was a fun, light hearted escape from a dreary March in Louisville.
This year the Parkinson’s Creativity Cruise 2 is expanding our program, and sailing on a 7 night cruise. The cruise will leave out of New York City, and go to Bermuda for a 3 days. On board we will be offering more classes. Katherine Autin, a Parkinson’s Disease Expert and Patient Advocate , will be leading a number of programs specifically tailored to the needs of Parkinson’s patient and their families. This will include creativity classes, accessible shore excursions support meetings, dancing class and more. The Breakaway is a newer ship, with lots of exciting options onboard. We look forward to Kareokkee nights, going to see a live musical, and feasting on different international cuisine. On the island we are planning on an accessible tour of Bermuda plus optional beach and perfumery outings.
