Do you have a craving for French wine, a yearning for fine French cuisine, or just a desire to practice speaking French? Is a trip to France out of the question for this year? Well, fear not, Montreal awaits and it’s much easier on the budget.

Montreal is a cosmopolitan city that blends tradition, old world charm and modern architecture. It is multicultural and easy to navigate, so let’s find a place to call home while we visit. I love hotels with character, history and that “ je ne sais quoi”

So, I found the L Hotel located in the heart of Old Montreal, situated between the St. Lawrence River and downtown Montreal, it is a 56 room boutique hotel with an impressive private modern art collection. Yes, I said “private” art collection and you will recognize who the owner is. The person who owns the hotel and the art is none other than Georges Marciano, co-creator of Guess Jeans. I think many Baby Boomers have owned a pair of his jeans some time in their lives. Among the collection are original works by Chagall and Warhol, so art lovers will be delighted.

The rooms at the L all have high ceilings and large windows. There is a mini-fridge, coffee/tea maker and free bottled water. The hotel has a small fitness room, free WiFi, Starbucks coffee in the morning and flavored water during the day.

Great bars and restaurants in Old Montreal are within walking distance and downtown Montreal is merely a 10 minute train ride away. If you stop by the Tourist Bureau on Notre Dame St. East, they will provide you with a free map so you can take a self-guided tour.

There are many attractions and most likely at the top of the list is the Notre Dame Basilica. If you visit at night, you will be treated to a light show (for a small charge).

You can stroll along the St. Lawrence River or rent a bike. Stop by Bonsecours Market, the oldest public market in Montreal, pick up some souvenirs on Saint-Paul Street, then tour the Montreal Biodome, housed in the former velodrome built during the 1976 Olympics. It’s a botanical garden, indoor zoo and aquarium all rolled into one, and the only place in the world that replicates all four seasons.

Speaking of all four seasons, anytime of the year is a good time to visit this charming city. Each season brings it own festivals, shows, cuisine and entertainment options. So, why not check your calendar and then check into the L Hotel – Georges and his art collection will be waiting. A bientot!
