River Cruises: What’s It All About?

$0.00

Quick Overview

I am often asked why so many people are drawn to river cruises, and for me, it’s an easy answer.  It is hands-down the best way to explore the history and culture of some of the most historic rivers in the world and the cities located along them.  River cruises offer you access to places and experiences that ocean cruises, and even some land tours, can’t.  Add the convenience of unpacking only once, the amenities of a fine hotel, top-notch excursions, and excellent food -- and you’re in for a vacation you’ll long remember.

For many travelers, river cruises provide a more intimate vacation experience, with most ships carrying from 100-165 passengers.  You’ll find it easy to meet and get to know others on the cruise, find like-minded people who enjoy the same things, and maybe even make new friends you’ll decide to cruise with again!

The typical river cruising season runs from March through December of each year, and itineraries range from 7 to 10+ days.  Some of the popular itineraries include those in Europe, where you can spend your days exploring the grand cities and quaint villages along the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers.  Or, simply relax on the ship’s sun deck and take in the picturesque views of fairytale castles, manicured vineyards, and commanding architecture.

At the end of a long day of sightseeing, you’ll be cheerfully welcomed back to the ship by the staff and enjoy an evening of dining, typically followed by music, entertainment or local guest lecturers.  One of my favorites is the local wine that is often featured at dinner, along with regional dishes.

If you enjoy a more relaxed approach to touring, want to truly experience the historical and cultural aspects of a country, and like cruising – then river cruising might just be for you!   Next week I’ll share my recent experience on a Viking River Cruise, so I hope you’ll check back then.

Safe travels!
